Rising Vibrio Infections Linked to Warming Chesapeake Bay Waters
The Chesapeake Bay is experiencing a rise in Vibrio vulnificus infections, a bacterium often referred to as 'flesh-eating bacteria.' This increase is attributed to climate change, which has warmed the Bay's waters by 1.8°F (1°C) over the past 30 years, according to NOAA. Vibrio thrives in warm, brackish waters with salinity levels between 10 and 20 parts per 1,000, conditions increasingly met in the Bay. Infections occur through open wounds or consumption of contaminated seafood, particularly raw oysters. Maryland and Virginia reported over 400 Vibrio cases in 2025, with V. vulnificus accounting for a significant portion. The CDC estimates 80,000 Vibrio infections annually in the U.S., with 150-200 cases of V. vulnificus, which has a 20% mortality rate. The warming trend has extended Vibrio's active season and geographic range, raising public health concerns.
