Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson's Handling of Migrant Crisis Under Scrutiny Following Watchdog Report
Mayor Brandon Johnson of Chicago is facing scrutiny over his handling of a significant migrant crisis, following a report by the city's Inspector General, David Glockner. The report found that the city accurately and transparently accounted for $269 million spent on caring for over 46,000 migrants who arrived in Chicago between August 2022 and December 2024. The influx of migrants, many sent from the southern border on buses paid for by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, strained Chicago's social services and budget. At the peak of the crisis, 15,000 migrants were housed in 38 shelters, with many others living in police stations and airports. The situation has exacerbated tensions between Chicago's Black and Latino communities, as resources were diverted to address the immediate needs of the new arrivals.
