CAFRE Students Gain Insights from Progressive Farming Systems in Scotland
Students from the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) recently embarked on a study tour to Scotland, where they explored various innovative farming systems. The tour included visits to several farms, each showcasing different aspects of modern agriculture. At Myremill Farm, students observed the use of robotic milking systems, which allow cows to be milked more frequently, enhancing milk yields. Darnlaw Farm highlighted the role of genetics and selective breeding in herd development, while Parkend Farm demonstrated the benefits of automation in improving efficiency and work-life balance. Over Finlarg showcased a diverse livestock system, and Holehouse Farm illustrated the integration of dairy, beef, and sheep production. The final stop at West Galdenoch Farm provided insights into large-scale dairy production. The tour was supported by The Gibson Trust and aimed to provide students with practical knowledge and exposure to advanced agricultural practices.
