Los Angeles Mayoral Debates Highlight Key Issues and Surprises
The recent back-to-back mayoral debates in Los Angeles featured incumbent Mayor Karen Bass, Councilmember Nithya Raman, and reality TV star Spencer Pratt. The debates, held at the Sherman Oaks Adult Center and the Skirball Cultural Center, showcased the candidates' positions on various issues, including homelessness and public safety. Raman pledged to significantly reduce homeless encampments by the 2028 Olympics and eliminate them by 2030. Her strategy contrasts with Bass's Inside Safe program, which has achieved a 17.5% reduction in encampments citywide. The debates also touched on the city's needle exchange program, with Bass expressing openness to ending it, a stance that surprised some given its role in public health efforts. Pratt, known for his strong rhetoric on social media, also participated, emphasizing the need to address drug addiction on the streets.
