Mount Soledad Honors Air Force Hero with Medal of Honor Plaque
Master Sgt. John 'Chappy' Chapman, an Air Force hero, was honored with a plaque at the Mount Soledad National Veterans Memorial in San Diego, California. Chapman was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor in 2018 for his bravery during the Battle of Takur Ghar in Afghanistan on March 4, 2002. During the battle, Chapman was wounded while engaging enemy forces and was left behind by his Navy SEAL team, who believed he was dead. Despite his injuries, Chapman regained consciousness and continued to fight until he succumbed to his wounds. His actions saved the lives of many, including 18 men on a helicopter he did not know. The plaque, carved from black granite, stands as a testament to his heroism and sacrifice.
