Timber and Plaskett Fires Burn Over 19,000 Acres in Big Sur, California
Two wildfires, the Timber Fire and the Plaskett Fire, are currently burning in California's Big Sur region, threatening structures and prompting evacuations. The Timber Fire, which started on August 8, has grown to 19,296 acres and is 21% contained as of Thursday morning. It is burning in the rugged terrain of the Los Padres National Forest near the Ventana Wilderness. The Plaskett Fire, which ignited on August 26, has spread to 140 acres and remains 0% contained. Both fires are being fueled by critically low humidity, warm temperatures, and gusty winds, making firefighting efforts challenging. The cause of both fires remains under investigation, and officials are working to assess damage and monitor weather conditions to aid containment efforts. A slight increase in overnight humidity and cooler temperatures is expected to provide some relief, according to CAL FIRE.
