Federal Judge Strikes Down Trump-Rubio 75-Nation Visa Ban, Citing Overreach of Authority
A federal judge in New York, US District Judge Jeannette Vargas, has invalidated a policy implemented by President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio that suspended the processing of visa applications for individuals from 75 nations. The judge ruled that the policy was 'contrary to law and in excess of statutory authority.' The ban, which was announced by Secretary Rubio in January, was justified by the Trump administration as a measure to prevent immigrant visitors from burdening U.S. taxpayers. However, Judge Vargas determined that the policy 'runs afoul' of the Immigration and Nationality Act by mandating the refusal of visas to eligible applicants without a legal basis. The ruling was a result of a legal challenge brought forth by two nonprofit organizations, African Communities Together and Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC), along with 11 individuals, including those whose family members had been denied visas and others seeking employment-based petitions.
