Discovery of 52,503 Roman Coins Reveals Ancient Ritual Practices
In 2010, a metal detectorist discovered the Frome Hoard, a collection of 52,503 Roman coins, in Somerset, England. The coins, dating from the third and early fourth centuries C.E., were found in a cracked clay pot, suggesting they were buried as part of a communal religious offering. The hoard includes coins from the central Roman Empire, the Gallic Empire, and the Britannic Empire, with a significant number minted under the rebel emperor Carausius. The discovery provides insight into the political and religious practices of the time, highlighting the use of coin hoards in ritual offerings.
