101-Year-Old Manhattan Tenant Defrauded by Building Superintendent
Antonio Ruas, a 101-year-old tenant in Manhattan, was defrauded of $350,000 by his building superintendent, Rosalind Hernandez. Hernandez, who had gained Ruas's trust and was given power of attorney, was convicted of grand larceny and sentenced to up to three years in prison. She was also ordered to pay $265,000 in restitution. Hernandez exploited Ruas's declining health and language barrier to misappropriate his funds, promising to manage his finances while he was in Brazil. Instead, she used his money for personal expenses. The case highlights the vulnerability of elderly individuals to financial exploitation.
