U.S. House Approves Extension of Oil and Gas Permitting Fund, Impacting Federal Land Development
The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the License to Drill Act (H.R. 7831), which aims to extend the Permit Processing Improvement Fund (PPIF) that supports oil and natural gas permitting activities on public lands. This program, crucial for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) offices, is set to expire in September unless reauthorized by Congress. The PPIF is funded by fees from operators seeking drilling permits and is designed to improve permitting efficiency. Industry groups like the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) and Western Energy Alliance have expressed support for the bill, highlighting its role in reducing permitting delays and enhancing agency resources. The program, initially established under the Energy Policy Act of 2005, supports staffing and training at BLM offices in key producing states such as Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming.
