Louisiana Lawmakers to Revise Congressional Map Following Supreme Court Ruling
A legislative committee in Louisiana is set to meet on Friday to gather public input on a new congressional district map. This follows a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that invalidated the current map, which was criticized for relying too heavily on racial considerations in its design. The Supreme Court's ruling, authored by Justice Samuel Alito, challenged the legality of the additional majority-Black district, which was created to comply with the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The committee, chaired by State Sen. Caleb Kleinpeter, is expected to favor a map that maintains one of the state's two majority-Black districts. The decision has led to the suspension of party primary elections for U.S. House seats, with absentee voting already underway. The governor has postponed these primaries to July 15, unless the legislature decides on a different date.
