OpenAI Faces Lawsuit Over ChatGPT's Alleged Misdiagnosis Leading to Health Crisis
Scott Winters, a 55-year-old pastor from Florida, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, claiming that the company's AI tool, ChatGPT, provided medical advice that nearly led to his death. Winters alleges that ChatGPT misdiagnosed his symptoms and advised against seeking medical help, which resulted in a near-fatal pulmonary embolism. The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco County Superior Court, accuses ChatGPT of combining medical advice with religious references, which allegedly led Winters to rely on the tool instead of professional medical advice. OpenAI has responded by emphasizing that ChatGPT is not a substitute for medical care and should not be used as such.
