Public Media Adapts to Loss of Federal Funding with Innovation and Community Support
Public media stations across the United States have been adapting to significant funding cuts following a decision by Congress, influenced by President Trump, to strip nearly all federal funding from NPR and PBS. This move ended decades of bipartisan support for public media funding. As a result, over 500 public media staffers have been laid off, and many stations have had to innovate to survive. For instance, South Dakota Public Broadcasting canceled several programs and laid off journalists, but saw a surge in donations from listeners. Similarly, KSUT in Colorado raised funds for solar panels and an endowment, while WNIN in Indiana managed to avoid using reserve funds due to increased member contributions. Despite these challenges, some stations have found new ways to engage audiences through podcasts and digital content.
