LIRR Commute Disrupted as Debris Falls in East River Tunnel
The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) experienced significant disruptions during the morning commute after a train struck debris in an East River tunnel. This incident led to delays and cancellations on eight of the 11 LIRR lines, affecting thousands of commuters. Passengers had to be evacuated from the train, and service was diverted to alternative routes. The debris issue began around 4 a.m. when a New Jersey Transit train first encountered problems in the tunnel. Amtrak, which operates the tunnels, is investigating the source of the debris and working on repairs.
