New York City Sees Record Welfare Recipients, Sparking Economic Concerns
New York City has experienced a significant increase in welfare recipients, with nearly 865,000 individuals receiving assistance over the past year. This marks the highest number of welfare recipients in almost three decades, resulting in public assistance spending reaching a record $2.7 billion. The increase represents a 55.7% rise since 2022, with the city's budget for cash-assistance payments soaring by 72.6% from $1.57 billion in fiscal 2022. The current administration, led by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, inherited this situation from former Mayor Eric Adams. Critics, including Councilwoman Joann Ariola, argue that the rise in welfare dependency is part of a broader political strategy to increase government reliance. The Department of Social Services attributes the increase to economic challenges such as rising rents and food costs, compounded by the end of pandemic-related federal and state support.
