Oakland Program CROP Achieves 0% Recidivism Rate for Formerly Incarcerated Individuals
The Oakland-based nonprofit Creating Restorative Opportunities and Programs (CROP) has reported a 0% recidivism rate among its 'Ready 4 Life' residential fellowship alumni since its inception in 2023. This program provides job training, life skills, leadership development, and mentorship to formerly incarcerated individuals. Participants, referred to as 'fellows,' move into CROP's West Oakland headquarters for 12 months, attending workshops structured like a full-time job. They receive a $1,000 monthly stipend, with $600 for immediate use and $400 saved for graduation to assist with moving costs. Additionally, CROP provides $100 weekly for groceries and transportation, along with laptops and internet navigation training. Many of CROP's staff, including senior lead coach Michael Stone and Director of Operations Matthew Braden, are formerly incarcerated themselves, bringing firsthand understanding to the program.
