St. Mary's County Nominates Areas for Federal Investment Program to Boost Economic Development
St. Mary's County Commissioners have unanimously voted to nominate two census tracts for the federal Opportunity Zone 2.0 program, aiming to attract private investment through tax incentives. The selected areas, Great Mills Road and California, are economically distressed and could benefit from redevelopment projects. The Great Mills Road area, despite being within military aircraft noise zones, was chosen due to its significant need for reinvestment. The California area, with vacant parcels and public land, offers potential for development. These nominations will be submitted to the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, which will review and forward recommendations to Governor Wes Moore. The final decision will be made by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
