Iowa Lawmakers Consider AI for Analyzing School and County Budgets to Cut Costs
Iowa House lawmakers are evaluating a potential multi-million dollar contract with Tyler Technologies to utilize artificial intelligence (AI) for analyzing local government and school district budgets. The initiative aims to identify cost-saving opportunities and overlaps in services provided by different entities. During a House Government Oversight Committee meeting, Mark Welch from Tyler Technologies explained how the AI model, developed over 12 years, uses publicly accessible budget data to facilitate 'priority-based' budgeting. This approach allows for spending comparisons between local governments and entities, potentially leading to significant savings. House Speaker Pat Grassley expressed interest in the transparency and insights the AI could provide, noting the lack of detailed budget information available to lawmakers. The AI model has been used in other states, such as Arizona and Alabama, to successfully reduce government spending.
