Dr. George Colin Stove's Legacy: Pioneering Radar Technology and Remote Sensing
Dr. George Colin Stove, a renowned inventor and scientist, passed away in July 2026. Born in Sandwick, Shetland, in 1949, Stove was deeply connected to his island roots. He pursued a career in geography and geology, earning his PhD from the University of Aberdeen. Under the mentorship of Professor R. V. Jones, Stove developed a keen interest in radar research, which became the cornerstone of his career. He made significant contributions to remote sensing, particularly in the use of LANDSAT satellite data and radar technology to map Scotland's peatlands. Stove's work gained international recognition, leading to his appointment as a principal investigator for the European Space Agency. He later founded Geospace Consultancy Services Ltd and co-founded Adrok, where he developed atomic dielectric resonance (ADR) technology. This innovation allowed for deep-penetrating radiowave signals to classify subsurface materials, revolutionizing fields such as oil exploration and medical diagnostics.
