Florida Woman's Driver's License Denial Highlights Statewide Identity Verification Issues
A Port Charlotte woman, Barbie Mitchell, has been unable to obtain a Florida driver's license due to complications arising from her marital history and missing documents. Mitchell, who has been married three times, faces challenges in proving her identity because the state requires documentation for each marriage and divorce. Her second marriage to a man named Johnson, who disappeared during Hurricane Katrina, has been particularly problematic as his body was never recovered, and no death certificate was issued. Despite being able to marry a third time and receiving a Florida title and license plate for her car, Mitchell remains unable to drive legally. This issue is not isolated, as many others in Florida face similar challenges with identity verification, prompting Republican State Rep. Vanessa Oliver to investigate the matter further.
