Akron Nonprofit Rejects Federal Funding to Continue Refugee Services
The International Institute of Akron, an organization dedicated to assisting refugees, has decided to forgo federal funding due to restrictions that would exclude many of the populations it serves. The decision comes amid changes in federal policies that have halted refugee resettlement programs since January 2025. The organization is shifting its focus to social services, including employment assistance and language classes, and is seeking to raise $250,000 to support its operations. The community has responded positively, donating over $80,000 in a week.
