Baltimore Mayor Faces Discrimination Lawsuit Amid EEOC Focus on DEI Practices
Andrew C. Freeman, a former vice president at East Baltimore Development Inc., has filed a federal lawsuit and an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) complaint against Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott. Freeman, who is white and Jewish, alleges racial discrimination following his termination shortly after a promotion. The lawsuit claims that Freeman was unfairly dismissed based on race and that there was an attempt to rehire a former chief real estate officer. This legal action comes at a time when diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives are under increased scrutiny nationwide. The EEOC, led by Andrea Lucas, has shifted its focus to include reverse discrimination claims, particularly those involving white, male plaintiffs. This shift has sparked concerns about the potential chilling effect on lawful DEI efforts, which aim to create equal opportunities for historically marginalized groups.
