DeSantis' Tax Plan Faces Criticism Over Potential Impact on Florida's Mosquito Control
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has proposed a significant expansion of the state's homestead exemption, which could lead to one of the largest property tax cuts in Florida's history. The plan, titled 'Save Our Homes From Excessive Property Taxes,' aims to increase the current $50,000 homestead exemption to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028. While DeSantis claims this could eliminate property taxes for 60% of Florida homeowners, independent analysis suggests the actual figure is closer to 28%. The proposal, passed by the Florida House and Senate, also includes a reduction in the cap on annual assessment increases for nonhomestead properties from 10% to 5%. However, the plan has raised concerns about a projected $8 billion shortfall for local governments, which could impact services like mosquito control, crucial in a state prone to mosquito-borne illnesses.
