Woman on Trial for Posing as Child for Over 15 Years in Brazil
Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira, a 37-year-old woman, is currently on trial in Brazil for fraud and identity theft after allegedly posing as a child for more than 15 years. Oliveira, who used various aliases such as 'Gabriele,' 'Julia,' and 'Emily,' is accused of deceiving multiple individuals and organizations by claiming to be a preteen runaway or a child suffering from severe illnesses. In one instance, she lived with a couple in Joinville, Brazil, for 14 months, speaking in a high-pitched voice and surrounding herself with dolls. Police chief Rodrigo Gusso arrested her after a relative of the couple grew suspicious. Oliveira's lawyers acknowledge she invented identities but deny financial wrongdoing, stating she sought attention and care she felt she lacked growing up. Her case has garnered significant attention in Brazil, with 194 million views on Instagram alone, due to its unusual and implausible nature.
