Euro-Med Monitor Challenges Israeli Claims on Gaza Famine, Highlights Severe Malnutrition
The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor has disputed Israeli claims that downplay the severity of hunger and malnutrition in Gaza. The organization accuses Israel of selectively using UNICEF data to challenge famine indicators documented by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC). According to Euro-Med, Israel's cited figure of 0.5% acute malnutrition only considers the weight-for-height indicator, while the mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) measurement shows a rate of 1.3%. This suggests that approximately one in every 77 children under five suffers from acute malnutrition. Additionally, the organization highlights a 12.2% stunting rate, indicating long-term nutritional deprivation. The report also notes that the UNICEF assessment covered only 83% of Gaza's population, excluding over 358,000 people due to security restrictions.
