Study Reveals Public's Inability to Detect AI-Generated Messages
A recent study conducted by researchers, including Jiaqi Zhu, involved over 1,300 American participants aged 18 to 84, examining their ability to discern AI-generated messages. Participants were shown AI-generated messages, such as apologies sent via email, and divided into four groups with varying levels of information about the message's origin. The study found that when participants were aware a message was AI-generated, they rated the sender negatively, perceiving them as lazy and insincere. Conversely, when they believed the message was human-written, the sender was viewed as genuine and thoughtful. Surprisingly, participants who were not informed about the message's origin had a similarly positive impression as those who thought it was human-written. The study highlights a lack of skepticism towards AI-generated content, even among frequent AI users.
