University of Stirling Secures Funding to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance in Vietnamese Pangasius Farming
The University of Stirling in Scotland has received GBP 2.4 million (USD 3.2 million, EUR 2.8 million) in funding for a four-year international research project. This initiative aims to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) within Vietnam's pangasius-farming industry. Led by Professor Margaret Crumlish of Stirling's Institute of Aquaculture, the project will investigate the development of AMR in freshwater aquaculture systems and the obstacles preventing farmers from adopting alternatives to antibiotics. The research team comprises experts in aquaculture, microbiology, veterinary medicine, environmental science, social sciences, and humanities. They will collaborate with farmers, policymakers, industry leaders, and other stakeholders to create a research roadmap and a practical framework for improving antibiotic stewardship in freshwater aquaculture. Professor Crumlish highlighted that AMR is a critical global challenge affecting human, animal, and environmental health, with aquatic environments playing a...
