Ebola Outbreak Highlights U.S. Retreat from Global Health Efforts
The recent Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda has underscored the weakening of global health infrastructure, particularly highlighting the United States' reduced role in epidemic preparedness. The outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has already resulted in over 860 suspected cases and 200 deaths. The World Health Organization has declared it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Historically, the U.S. has been a major contributor to global health security, investing over $5.4 billion during the 2014 Ebola epidemic. However, recent policy shifts under the Trump administration have significantly reduced U.S. involvement in global health initiatives, including the termination of many USAID programs.
