El Paso Faces Record-Breaking Summer Heat and Rising Energy Costs
El Paso, Texas, is experiencing one of its hottest summers on record, with an average temperature of 86.6°F (30.3°C) between June 1 and August 31, 2026. This marks the fifth warmest summer in the city's history, with 51 days exceeding 100°F (37.8°C) and 87 consecutive days with highs above 90°F (32.2°C). The urban heat island effect and climate change are contributing to these rising temperatures, which have become more frequent since 2009. Warmer nights, with average lows above 72°F (22.2°C) in 16 of the last 18 years, are forcing residents to use cooling systems for longer periods, driving up energy consumption. A 13% rate increase by El Paso Electric, effective May 1, has further exacerbated the financial burden on residents.
