NERC Issues Alert on Data Centers Threatening U.S. Grid Stability
The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) has issued a Level 3 Essential Action Alert, its highest urgency notification, due to the rapid growth of data centers, particularly those supporting AI training and cryptocurrency mining. This growth is introducing significant risks to the U.S. bulk power system. The alert, issued on May 4, 2026, highlights the potential for large load reductions, where over 1,000 MW of computational load can drop offline in seconds during minor grid disturbances. This can lead to frequency instability or cascading outages. NERC has identified a lack of sufficient processes to manage these variable loads and has issued a new Reliability Guideline on Risk Mitigation for Emerging Large Loads. Registered entities must implement seven essential actions, including enhanced interconnection studies and improved real-time operations, with responses due by August 3, 2026.
