Potential Tropical Cyclone One-C Approaches Hawaii with Heavy Rainfall Threat
Potential Tropical Cyclone One-C (PTC 1-C) is currently located over 1,000 miles east-southeast of Honolulu, Hawaii, and is expected to strengthen into a named storm, likely Hernan, by Friday. As of 11 a.m. HST on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, the system's minimum central pressure was estimated at 1003 mb (29.62 inches of mercury). Heavy rainfall is forecast to begin on the Big Island on Friday, spreading to Maui and other Hawaiian Islands over the weekend. Rainfall totals are expected to range between 5 and 10 inches, with localized amounts up to 20 inches possible. Gusty winds may accompany the rain bands, but the primary concern is life-threatening flooding and mudslides, particularly in mountainous areas. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) predicts PTC 1-C will likely become a strong tropical storm as it nears Hawaii, with the possibility of landfall as a hurricane.
