UW-Madison Faces Lawsuit Over Race-Based Scholarships Following Supreme Court Ruling
The University of Wisconsin-Madison is facing a lawsuit filed by conservative groups, including the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty, Young America’s Foundation, and Citizens Defending Liberty. The lawsuit, filed in Waukesha County Circuit Court, targets the university's race-based scholarships and grants, alleging they violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. This legal action follows a recent Wisconsin Supreme Court decision that deemed undergraduate retention grants for minority students unconstitutional. The lawsuit names five top administrators at UW-Madison, including Interim Chancellor Eric Wilcots and Provost John Zumbrunnen. Despite abandoning several race-based scholarships since 2023, the university continues to administer at least 20 such programs, which the plaintiffs argue lack transparency.
