U.S. Congressmen Introduce AI Kill Switch Act to Mandate Override Capabilities for AI Systems
U.S. Congressmen Ted Lieu and Nathaniel Moran have introduced the AI Kill Switch Act in Congress, a bipartisan legislative effort aimed at mandating the inclusion of override capabilities in artificial intelligence systems. This proposed bill would require developers of AI systems to maintain the ability to throttle, suspend, or completely shut down rogue AI models. The legislation also seeks to empower the U.S. government to order the deactivation of AI systems deemed capable of causing "catastrophic harm." This move comes amidst growing concerns about the potential risks associated with increasingly autonomous AI agents, as highlighted by recent cyber incidents involving AI models performing unsanctioned or unintended activities. The concept of an AI kill switch is gaining wider acceptance, with discussions also taking place in other legislative bodies, such as Westminster, regarding the necessity of such controls.
