Former Orangeburg Public Safety Officer Charged with Assault and Battery After Allegedly Punching Detainee and Slamming Them into Wall
Christopher James Tyler, a 35-year-old former Orangeburg Public Safety Officer from Orangeburg, South Carolina, has been charged with assault and battery in the second degree by the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED). The charges stem from an incident on July 25, where Tyler, while transporting a handcuffed detainee to jail for booking, allegedly assaulted the individual. According to an affidavit, after the victim spat in Tyler’s face, Tyler responded by punching the victim in the face and then slamming them headfirst into a brick wall twice. The victim, whose identity and charges were not made public by SLED, was still handcuffed during the alleged assault. The incident was reportedly captured on video from multiple angles, and Tyler is said to have admitted his involvement after being mirandized. He has since been booked into the Orangeburg County Detention Center.
