L3Harris Proposes Adapting U.S. Air Traffic Surveillance Network for Homeland Defense Against Drones and Missiles
L3Harris Technologies is advocating for the adaptation of its existing nationwide air traffic surveillance network to bolster U.S. homeland defense capabilities. The proposal aims to leverage the current infrastructure, which includes ground stations, communication links, and data-fusion systems, to track drones, low-flying aircraft, and cruise missiles. This network, built and operated by L3Harris for over two decades for the U.S. National Airspace System, covers the continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, and Puerto Rico. The company suggests that existing radar sites and ground stations could integrate additional sensors, such as passive radars and software-defined Active Electronically Scanned Array panels.
