Thailand Pursues OECD Membership by 2028, Addresses Anti-Bribery Reforms
Thailand is actively pursuing membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) with a target of 2028. To achieve this, the nation is undertaking significant legal reforms, particularly in areas related to anti-bribery. These reforms include amendments to provisions concerning the bribing of foreign public officials, adjustments to laws governing the liability of legal entities involved in bribery, and new legislation to prevent bribe payments from being treated as tax-deductible expenses. These legislative changes are being prepared by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) and the Revenue Department. The OECD Secretary-General's representative, Andreas Ruzicka, noted that Thailand's clear membership target is beneficial for accelerating progress and monitoring efforts. He also highlighted the complexity of the technical review process, urging broad communication and involvement from all sectors within Thailand to ensure public awareness and understanding.
