Protests Erupt in Albania Over Jared Kushner-Backed Resort Development Threatening Protected Wetland
Thousands of Albanians have taken to the streets to protest a proposed luxury resort development backed by Jared Kushner's investment firm. The project, planned for the Vjosa-Narta wetland, a protected coastal area, has sparked significant opposition due to environmental concerns. Protesters, carrying signs and flamingo cutouts, argue that the development threatens local wildlife, including flamingos, seals, and sea turtles. The protests have been largely peaceful, though some clashes with security forces have occurred. The World Wildlife Fund has condemned the project, citing the area's ecological importance. The Albanian government, led by Prime Minister Edi Rama, supports the development as a means to boost tourism, despite ongoing investigations into the legality of land status changes that facilitated the project.
