Boeing Secures $75 Million Contract for Long-Range JDAM Production, Enhancing Strike Capabilities
Boeing has been awarded a $75 million contract by the U.S. Air Force for the production of a new variant of the Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM), known as the JDAM Long Range (JDAM LR). This contract marks the first production run of the jet-powered guided bomb, which can travel over 300 nautical miles. The JDAM LR is a modification of the existing JDAM, utilizing a wing-and-turbojet engine kit to extend its range significantly. Boeing has invested nearly $100 million of its own funds into the development of this program. The JDAM LR is designed to be compatible with any aircraft capable of deploying the conventional JDAM, allowing for seamless integration into existing military operations. The contract is an undefinitized action, meaning Boeing began work before a final price was agreed upon, a practice that has been criticized for its financial risks.
