Ghanaian National Sentenced for $10M Romance Scam Targeting Vulnerable Victims
A 41-year-old Ghanaian national, Derrick Van Yeboah, has been sentenced to 85 months in prison for orchestrating a romance scam that defrauded victims of over $10 million. The Justice Department revealed that Van Yeboah was a key figure in a criminal organization based in Ghana, which was responsible for stealing more than $100 million through romance scams and business email compromises. Van Yeboah impersonated fake romantic partners, engaging with victims online from 2015 to 2024. He was arrested in Ghana in 2025 and extradited to the U.S., where he pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud. The court identified at least 20 victims, including individuals from Delaware, Ohio, and North Carolina, who were deceived into sending large sums of money. Van Yeboah's assets included a house and jewelry worth significant amounts, and he was found with stolen vehicles from the U.S. and Canada.
