Knesset Passes Law to Prosecute Oct. 7 Terrorists, Establishes Special Military Court
The Knesset has unanimously passed a law to prosecute terrorists involved in the October 7, 2023, Hamas invasion. This legislation, described as 'historic' by its proponents, provides a legal framework for the prosecution of those responsible for the attack, which resulted in the deaths of at least 1,200 people and the taking of 251 hostages. The law outlines the selection of judges and prosecutors, trial procedures, and an appeals process. It establishes a special military court in Jerusalem to handle these cases, including those involving the Nukhba terrorists, an elite Hamas force. The law also prohibits the inclusion of these terrorists in prisoner release deals. The legislation aims to expedite the judicial process, with expectations of verdicts within three to five years, as opposed to the 15 to 30 years it might take in regular courts.
