Ohio Teen Develops AI Tool to Combat Spotted Lanternfly Infestation
In Ohio, the arrival of spring is marked not only by blooming flowers but also by the emergence of the invasive Spotted Lanternfly (SLF). These pests, which have no natural predators, pose a significant threat to fruit trees and crops across the state. In response to this issue, Melody Lin, a 15-year-old from Butler County, has developed an AI-based tool to assess the risk of SLF infestation in various areas of Ohio. Her innovative project, part of her local 4-H chapter, has earned her second place in the National 4-H AI in Agriculture Challenge. Lin's tool utilizes data from the Ohio Department of Agriculture, NOAA, and local apple orchards to create a model that helps farmers identify impacted areas and take preventive measures.
