U.S. Colleges Implement AI Requirements and Courses to Foster Student Fluency
U.S. colleges and universities are increasingly integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into their curricula, with many introducing AI requirements for general education, majors, and certificate programs this fall. Institutions like Purdue University have unveiled comprehensive AI initiatives, including an AI graduation requirement where all students must take one of 22 designated AI courses. Other universities, such as Miami University, Ohio State University, and the State University of New York system, are embedding AI competencies into existing coursework. Northwestern University and the Wentworth Institute of Technology are launching AI-specific major programs, while Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business is introducing required AI courses. These varied approaches share a common goal: to ensure graduates possess 'AI fluency,' a skill increasingly demanded by employers. Faculty members are also working to provide clear guidance on AI use in syllabi to address concerns about academic integrity.
