U.S. and Five Eyes Allies Warn of China's Use of Job Platforms for Espionage
The United States, along with its Five Eyes intelligence partners, issued a joint warning about China's use of LinkedIn and other job platforms to extract secret information from security professionals. This alert marks a significant step as it is the first time the Five Eyes group, which includes the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, has publicly warned about such threats on networking platforms. The warning highlights China's use of artificial intelligence and other tools to create fake profiles and job offers targeting military officers and spies. These operatives pose as employees of consultancies or think tanks, aiming to lure individuals with access to classified information. The alert, drafted by the FBI and MI5, warns that those who respond to these offers may face pressure to provide nonpublic information, often with financial incentives. This development underscores ongoing tensions with China over espionage activities.
