EU Allocates $11.4 Billion for AI Gigafactories to Compete with US and China
The European Union has announced a significant investment of 10 billion euros ($11.4 billion) to establish seven AI gigafactories. This initiative aims to bridge the gap in AI development between the EU, the US, and China. The European Commission hopes this public funding will attract an additional 20 billion euros ($22.8 billion) in private investments. The gigafactories are expected to house at least 100,000 advanced AI chips, significantly enhancing the EU's computing power. This move is part of the EU's strategy to achieve tech sovereignty and reduce dependency on foreign technology providers, which could pose security risks. The EU currently lags behind the US and China in AI development, with higher electricity costs and a lack of component manufacturing being major challenges.
