New York Experiences Surge in Tornado Activity in 2026
New York State has seen a significant increase in tornado activity in 2026, with 24 confirmed tornadoes so far, compared to the annual average of 9-10 tornadoes (WIBX950, 2026). On September 2, a severe weather outbreak produced eight tornadoes across Western New York and the Finger Lakes region. Among these, an EF1 tornado traveled nearly seven miles through Waterloo and Seneca Falls, while an EF2 tornado with winds of 115 mph struck Fayette. The National Weather Service in Buffalo also confirmed EF1 tornadoes in Alexander, Olcott, Portageville, and Letchworth State Park. This year’s tornado count is approaching the state record of 33 tornadoes set in 2024. Improved detection technology and favorable weather conditions have contributed to the rise in confirmed tornadoes. (Source time: Thu, 10 Sep 2026 13:00:00 GMT)
