Governor Pritzker Urges Swift Senate Action on Bears Stadium Bill
Governor JB Pritzker is advocating for the Illinois Senate to expedite the passage of a 'megaprojects' bill that could facilitate the construction of a new Chicago Bears stadium in Arlington Heights. The bill, which has already passed the Illinois House, proposes tax incentives for large construction projects, including a provision allowing the Bears to negotiate a 'payment in lieu of taxes' instead of traditional property taxes. This arrangement aims to provide property tax relief to homeowners while supporting economic growth. However, some lawmakers, including Chicago Democrat Kelly Cassidy, oppose the bill, arguing that it prioritizes corporate interests over public needs. The Bears have owned the Arlington Race Track site for over three years, with plans for a multibillion-dollar stadium.
