Library of Congress Adds Nearly 500 9/11 Responder Oral Histories to Online Collection
The Library of Congress has significantly expanded its online collection by adding nearly 500 oral histories from 9/11 responders. This initiative, launched to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the September 11 events, makes available a comprehensive video archive developed by the Stony Brook World Trade Center Health and Wellness Program. The collection, housed in the American Folklife Center, includes 484 full-length video interviews conducted between April 2010 and September 2024, along with their corresponding transcripts. These interviews document the experiences of responders, their families, advocates, and medical personnel, detailing what they witnessed, their motivations for responding, what they endured, and the long-term effects on their health, families, and lives. Dr. Benjamin Luft, Director of the Stony Brook WTC Health and Wellness Program, initiated this project to preserve the testimonies of his patients, whom he recognized as witnesses to history.
