National Science Foundation Awards University of Toledo Nearly $1 Million for Advanced Mass Spectrometer
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded nearly $1 million to the University of Toledo (UToledo) for the acquisition of a state-of-the-art mass spectrometer with high-speed imaging capabilities, known as a MALDI-MS. Dr. Kristin Kirschbaum, director of UToledo’s Instrumentation Center, is leading this initiative. This new instrument offers a tenfold increase in spatial resolution compared to its predecessor, significantly enhancing research opportunities for both students and faculty across the university. Twenty primary research groups and regional collaborators, including Dr. Maria Coleman, Dr. Erin Prestwich, and Dr. Dragan Isailovic, are expected to utilize the device. The mass spectrometer will facilitate research in diverse areas such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, drug development, tissue engineering, and critical environmental issues like microplastic pollution and pesticide contamination.
