Irish Government Halts Planned Fuel Excise Duty Increases Amid Geopolitical Instability
The Irish Government has decided to postpone the planned reintroduction of full excise duty fuel costs, which were scheduled to begin on September 1 and October 1. This decision comes in response to ongoing geopolitical instability in the Middle East and its impact on global fuel prices. Initially, the government had planned a phased return of excise duties, with increases set for September 1, October 1, November 1, and December 1. However, the first two stages, which would have added 9 cents per liter to petrol and 10 cents to diesel in September, and an additional 8 cents per liter for both in October, will now be delayed. To formalize this, the Dáil will be recalled for a special session next Friday to agree on a financial resolution.
