Smoke from South Georgia Wildfires Reduces Visibility and Air Quality
Wildfires in southern Georgia have spread across tens of thousands of acres, causing significant smoke and air quality issues. The Pineland Road Fire in Clinch County has burned nearly 29,606 acres and is only 10% contained, while the Highway 82 Fire in Brantley County has scorched over 4,400 acres with 15% containment. Dry conditions, high winds, and lack of rain are exacerbating the situation, making it difficult for firefighting crews to control the blazes. Smoke from these fires has drifted north, affecting areas as far as Atlanta, where residents report hazy skies and a strong smell of burning. The National Weather Service has warned of reduced visibility, particularly in Clinch and Echols counties, where visibility could drop to half a mile.
